Mark and Cindy played in the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra. In 1981, their orchestra was the first high-school youth orchestra from the United States to visit China since the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. They felt lucky to be in Oklahoma, because their orchestra in New York could not raise enough money to visit China that year. The entire group including parents had a picture taken at the foot of the Great Wall of China.
