In 1980, one year after the United States and China established diplomatic relations and thirty years after he left the mainland, Leon returned as a member of the U.S. earthquake engineering team sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The team visited areas affected by the catastrophic Tangshan earthquake of 1976. Leon served not only as a professional, but also as the interpreter for his team. Relatives from far away came to meet him.
