Our First Child Is Identified as “Retarded”

Our eldest child, Frank, entered a public-school kindergarten when he was five years old. Shortly afterward, the school notified us that Frank was a “retarded” child incapable of learning in a regular classroom. He would need to be removed from the classroom, or be on medication. We reluctantly agreed to put Frank on medication, supervised by a physician, my father. My father was not convinced by the school’s evaluation and decided not to give Frank the medicine, which was allegedly intended to stimulate his mind.
